It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donzie Lee Flowers, age 78, of Chadbourn, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family — his sons, brother, cousin, nephew, daughters-in-law, and grandson.
Born and raised in Columbus County, North Carolina, Donzie graduated from West Side High School in 1965. Shortly after, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army in October 1965, where he was stationed at the Pentagon.
In 1969, Donzie relocated to New York City to build a better life for his wife and three children. He began a successful career as a Manager in the Teletype Department at Chemical Bank (1975–1985) and later worked with the New York City Transit System until retirement.
A devoted and compassionate partner, Donzie chose to retire early to care for his beloved Nita M. Jackson, until her passing in 2023. After her death, he returned home to North Carolina to be closer to his siblings.
A Man of Joy and Wisdom
Donzie was known for his zest for life, sense of humor, and love for family, music, dancing, and good company. Always the friendly antagonist, he delighted in sparking lively conversations and sharing laughter with those around him. He lived life with intention, independence, and heart — and when surrounded by those he loved most, he often said: “Oh, I am feeling so unnecessary!”
Loved Ones Who Preceded Him
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Flowers and Idairy Flowers; brothers Paul Flowers, James Franklin “Frankie” Flowers Jr., and Larry Darnell Flowers; sister Mary Ellen Flowers; niece Sharon M. Flowers; and his beloved partner Nita M. Jackson.
