It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John A. Johnson 101 of Maxton; who departed this life on December 10, 2025.
He will be dearly missed by family, friends and all who knew him; burial will follow in church cemetery.
Reflections of the life of Mr. John Arthur Johnson (Papason) John departed this life on December 10, 2025, after a short illness, he was born September 7, 1924, to the late George W. Johnson and Annie Bell Floyd Johnson. He attended school in Alma, NC and was a faithful lifetime member of Williams Chapel AME Zion Church. John was 101 years old and was married to his beloved wife Lucy Hayes Chambers Johnson for 80 years before she preceded him in death. He and his wife raised twelve children two of who also preceded him in death. He was a husband, father, and grandfather. He was a unique and humble soul with a kind heart and gentle spirit; and was loved by all who knew him. He was well known for beating any and everyone in a game of checkers. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters: Louise Johnson of the home, Helen J. Heath of Fayetteville NC, Pauline Drakeford, Joan J. Adams, Mamie J. Nykudi (Mack), and Christine Johnson, and his sons: Rev John W. Johnson (Lillie), Rev Willie Johnson (Barbara) of Orlando Florida, LaVerne Johnson and David Johnson (Rebecca) of Maxton NC. One brother-in-law, Alexander Fairley Jr., of Maxton. Thirty-Three grandchildren, Thirty-Seven great-grandchildren, Eleven great-great grands and a host of nieces and nephews.
